Washington County Sheriff Reports the arrest of man for felony drug possession.

On November 2nd inspectors for the US Postal Service informed the Major Crimes Task Force that they intercepted packages bound for New Matamoras that contained illegal bath salts. Utilizing a federal warrant, postal authorities opened the packages, which contained a total of twenty-five packages of bath salts. The packages tested positive for MDPV, the illicit chemical found in bath salts, which was recently classified as a Schedule I controlled substance.

This morning the packages were scanned and the shipment’s recipient a 34 year old New Matamoras man, was informed they were ready for pickup, with cash due upon delivery. A Postal Inspector was present a the man paid for $245 for one of the packages that contained ten packets of bath salts. The man only had enough money to pay for one of the packages and said he would return later to pay for the other package.

As he exited the New Matamoras Post Office the suspect was taken into custody by Task Force Agents. Under questioning, the suspect admitted knowing that the packets in the shipment contained bath salts but he claimed he did not know they were illegal. The man was subsequently charged with a third degree felony offense of possession of drugs and transported to the Washington County Jail. He remains incarcerated without bond pending his initial court appearance on November 7th.
